How can you run your cloud without relying on proprietary services such as Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive? This question was the focus of the OpenCloud talk at FrOSCon 2026. The recording is now available online.
A practical introduction to self-hosting OpenCloud
On 15 August 2026, Tobias Baader and Jannik Stehle demonstrated at FrOSCon how to get started with a self-hosted OpenCloud instance. The talk was aimed in particular at anyone new to self-hosting who wanted to gain a clear overview of the technical and organisational requirements.
The two speakers explained how OpenCloud works and how to set up your own instance quickly using Docker or Podman. Among other things, they addressed the following questions:
- What hardware is required to run it?
- How do you set up user accounts and shares?
- How can files be stored, shared and edited collaboratively?
- What are the benefits of a self-hosted cloud?
- What are the typical pitfalls and limitations of self-hosting?
As well as the technical set-up, there is also the fundamental question of who self-hosting is suitable for. This is because having your own cloud gives you greater control over files and infrastructure, but at the same time entails responsibility for operation, maintenance, updates and security.
