OpenCloud provides calendar and contact management for the community

PRESS RELEASE

OpenCloud Kalender und Kontakte

Berlin, 22 May 2025 - OpenCloud, the powerful open source platform for file management, file sharing and digital collaboration, is now adding calendars and contacts to its solution. The new functions in this first version are aimed in particular at the community and private individuals who want to manage their appointments and address books themselves.

Host appointments and contacts yourself

The new calendar and contacts function uses Radicale as a lean calendar and contacts server (CalDAV & CardDAV). This means that appointments and address book entries can be synchronised with popular apps on Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and Linux - without having to go through external cloud services.

OpenCloud pays particular attention to the protection of personal data: The address book and calendar are stored on the company's own server - an important step towards greater privacy and digital self-determination.

"The two features were developed specifically for our community - they were among the most frequently requested functions. In recent months, we have seen a real rush to OpenCloud, partly because more and more people actively want to migrate away from US services. As a direct response to the desire for digital independence, we now offer optional calendar and address book via OpenCloud in addition to the core functions of file management and file sharing," explains Tobias Baader, Product Manager of OpenCloud.

Advantages of the new function

The calendar and contact management does not require any third-party providers and can be set up quickly and easily thanks to the open CalDAV/CardDAV standard. It can be synchronised with almost all common apps such as Thunderbird or the iOS calendar. The solution is 100% open source, allows contacts and calendars to be stored on your own server and thus offers full control - resource-saving, transparent and data protection-friendly.

Collaboration Suite for business customers coming in 2026

OpenCloud will provide a groupware module comprising email, calendar and contacts for companies, providers and the public sector in 2026. Work on this new module, which is designed for scalability and performance, is already underway. The video conferencing solution OpenTalk, which like OpenCloud is part of the Heinlein Group, will also be integrated as a module component. In future, customers will be able to choose whether they want to use pure file management or prefer a complete collaboration suite with optional groupware and video conferencing.
