OpenCloud calendar and contact management available for the community

Digital self-determination starts with the little things - for example, the question of who we entrust with our calendars and contacts.

OpenCloud calendar and contact management

In recent months, we have received a lot of enthusiastic feedback about OpenCloud from the community. Thank you very much! - But one question and one request kept coming back: "When are calendar and contacts coming?"

Today is the day! - OpenCloud is now adding a calendar and contacts function to its solution. This first version is aimed in particular at our community and offers private users and families the opportunity to manage appointments and address books independently and with full control.

Take appointments and contacts into your own hands

Following the motto "From the community for the community", OpenCloud's new calendar and contacts function is based on the lean open source server Radicale and relies on the established open standards CalDAV and CardDAV. This makes it easy to synchronise appointments and address book entries with popular apps on Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and Linux - without having to go through central or commercial cloud services.

OpenCloud attaches particular importance to the protection of personal data: With this implementation, users store their contacts and calendars on their own server. A building block for more privacy and digital self-determination online.

Advantages for our users

  • Data protection & control: All calendar data remains under your own control, no disclosure to third parties.
  • Compatibility: Works with almost all calendar and contact apps (e.g. DAVx⁵ for Android, Thunderbird, iOS calendar)
  • Simplicity: Set up is quick and easy using the CalDAV standard.

Technical basis: Radicale 3

  • Written in Python, extremely resource-efficient
  • Saves data in simple file system format (no complex setup required)
  • Supports CalDAV (Calendar, Tasks) and CardDAV (Contacts)
  • 100% Open Source and OnPremises

Optional and modular

Anyone who does not need Calendar and Contacts can continue to operate the OpenCloud Core completely without this service. The functions are completely optional and therefore do not affect the operation of other services.

Collaboration Suite for business customers coming in 2026

OpenCloud will provide a groupware module comprising email, calendar and contacts for companies, providers and the public sector in 2026. Work on this new module, which is designed for scalability and performance, is already underway. The video conferencing solution OpenTalk, which like OpenCloud is part of the Heinlein Group, will also be integrated as a module component. In future, customers will be able to choose whether they want to use pure file management or prefer a complete collaboration suite with groupware and video conferencing as an option.
