The OpenCloud team is delighted to announce the release of OpenCloud 1.0 to all interested parties and the entire open source community!
This release is the first milestone in the development of the OpenCloud project: anyone interested can now install, test and validate this first version in their own environment - and see the new solution for file management, file sharing and content collaboration for themselves.
At OpenCloud, we focus on the following core values:
OpenCloud follows the tradition of proven Unix utilities, which should do one task - and do it perfectly. For us, this means that OpenCloud is a rock-solid file management platform that securely stores unstructured data including metadata. At the core of its functionality are well-defined and stable APIs, all relevant clients and efficient collaboration features such as Spaces or Web Office.
No, OpenCloud doesn't have an integrated coffee machine, but we're convinced that's not what our users are looking for either...
One of the goals of OpenCloud is to provide users with a very user-friendly interface, because we know that there are more important things in the world than file management. To ensure that our users can complete their daily tasks as conveniently and efficiently as possible, we attach great importance to:
- A fast and responsive user interface
- Compliance with known usability standards of the local operating system
- Easy access for all users
- A minimalist, clear design that only displays relevant information and thus enables effortless navigation through the software
Even the best software solution can quickly disappoint if administrators are not able to implement it quickly, the installation is difficult to understand or the administration of the installed system is perceived as cumbersome.
In order to offer administrators the best conditions, we have endeavored to provide a variety of installation options, ranging from a small, so-called single-binary installation on small devices such as a Raspberry Pi for "experiments" to scalable large installations on Kubernetes.
The so-called OpenCloud full deployment is recommended, which uses Docker Compose and contains everything that administrators or experienced users need to set up OpenCloud with full functionality within a few minutes.
Our competent support team is happy to assist customers with individual use cases, the installation and setup of OpenCloud and security issues. To round off our offering, we will be offering various professional services and support packages in the future. For stable operation with minimal effort.
*) Expected to be available from the production release in March 2025.
This first rolling release is just the beginning of the journey. From now on, customers can expect regular rolling releases approximately every three weeks and a supported production release in the first quarter of 2025. Rolling releases can be updated to their successor, regardless of whether it is the next rolling release or the next production release.
We look forward to the feedback from all testers of the first version.
