OpenCloud receives Blue Angel in the resource- and energy-efficient software category

PRESS RELEASE

Blauer Engel

Berlin, 14 October 2025 - OpenCloud, the powerful open source platform for file management, file sharing and digital collaboration, has been awarded the Blue Angel ecolabel. The certification confirms the strengths of OpenCloud: a lean, modern code without additional databases enables a resource-saving server setup and energy-efficient data processing. At the same time, OpenCloud fulfils important criteria for transparency and fairness, for example through open standards, comprehensive documentation, the absence of tracking and moderate hardware requirements that also enable the use of older systems.

Measurable energy efficiency in cloud operation

The certification is based on objective measurements under real operating conditions. RAL gGmbH, the independent certification body in the Blue Angel eco-label award procedure, was responsible for the test. OpenCloud impressed with its economical use of resources during operation and synchronisation as well as transparent consumption information for administrators. The modular architecture enables only required functions to be activated and hardware lifecycles to be extended; older systems are also fully supported.

Sustainability through open standards

The open interfaces and complete data portability of OpenCloud prevent vendor lock-ins and create the basis for sustainable IT strategies. Updates do not require new hardware and longer product cycles conserve resources.

"For us, open source not only means transparency, but also responsibility towards users, the environment and society. The Blue Angel award confirms our claim: innovation, sustainability and digital freedom belong together," explains Klaas Freitag, CTO of OpenCloud.

Orientation for sustainable IT procurement

The Blue Angel for software is based on defined, measurable criteria for energy- and resource-saving IT solutions. The certification provides companies and the public sector with a reliable basis for sustainable IT procurement decisions. Especially with growing data volumes and rising energy costs, this award is also an economically relevant decision criterion.

The preparation for certification was carried out in cooperation with Green Coding Solutions GmbH.
